Is your gut causing your breakouts?

As a nationally board certified traditional naturopath and developer of the new Cammi and Company skin care products - I believe to heal your skin your must heal it both topical and internal. Doctors have researched the connection between gut and the skin for over 50 years now.

Is your skin breaking out and no matter what you put on it ( topical ) its NOT getting better? Do you feel depressed and just plain down a good portion of the time? Do you often have digestive problems, skin irritations, migraines or headaches? And if you're a female who gets a weird tongue, vaginal itching, burning with urination... and sometimes a thick, white discharge... then yeast infection is almost certainly involved.

Acne can be both a psychologically and emotionally painful condition, especially for adolescents. I have experience with this personally as I struggled with severe acne as a teenager, and even into my 30s I would go embarrassed to get a facial trying to clear it up; in addition I never left the house without a ton of makeup over my skin, trying to hide the acne.  In fact, I even have a few scars from acne. With acne affecting about 85 percent of the population at some time in their life – including adults -- it is the most common skin disease addressed by dermatologists.

How to Treat the Root Cause of Your Acne

What you want to do is to eliminate the underlying cause.  Fortunately, there are some very simple strategies that will accomplish just that, that work nearly every single time.

What most experts will tell you about acne is that diet has nothing to do with it. Well, nothing could be further from the truth.

What has become clearly apparent is that your diet has everything to do with it!

If you are predisposed to developing acne, and are eating a diet that is causing your insulin levels and associated insulin growth factors to rise, then you will have acne. If you are eating a diet that is causing an overgrowth of yeast in your body, then you will have acne.

When you eat refined carbohydrates and sugar, it causes a surge of insulin and his can lead to an excess of testosterone in males and females which cause your pores to secrete sebum, a greasy substance that attracts acne-promoting bacteria.

So, the simple solution is to radically reduce the amount of food you consume that is causing your body to make insulin or yeast. The main culprits here are:

  • Bread
  • Cereal
  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Potatoes
  • Corn
  • Beer
  • Wine
  • Fruit

Women tell me all the time, " well I eat the organic" - understand that even a high-quality, organic, whole wheat bread will cause this problem because it's still a sugar to your body and it is made with yeast to make it rise.

Yes Fruits are also sugar and will likely increase the amount of insulin in your body, and as a result can exacerbate your acne if you're predisposed to it.

You'll want to replace sugars and carbohydrates with vegetables only.

To heal your breakouts-

Test your body for yeast or food intolerances- I offer an at home, easy swab to do test kit. All you do is swab your throat once and send the swab to the lab. The test kit is $68.00, you can order it at . Or email me at Once you know what your body body needs to detox, or what you need to supplement with, you can clear your skin up quickly. If you suspect a food may be the cause I also offer food intolerance testing

Establish proper balance of bacteria --especially if you were given an antibiotic, it's very important to take a probiotic supplement. Antibiotics wipe out the good bacteria in your gut as well as good bacteria on your face. One common side effect of that is an overgrowth of yeast.

Both men and women can develop candida, an overgrowth of yeast a result of disrupting the balance of bacteria in your gut.

Of course, by reducing your intake of food that bad bacteria and yeast thrive on, i.e. sugars and carbs, in-addition to yeasty foods you will also help reestablish the proper balance of bacteria in your gut.

Optimize your vitamin D levels – D is crucially important to establishing a healthy immune system and controlling virtually any type of infection.

When you optimize your vitamin D levels you make over 200 antimicrobial defenses in your body (also called host defense peptides). They are an essential component of your innate immune response.

The best way to get D is to expose large portions of your skin to healthy amounts of sunshine – just enough to cause your skin to turn a very light pink. Your body can produce as much as 20,000 IU's with this level of exposure on most of your body. After that your body will not make any more vitamin D, and you may in fact cause skin damage if you stay out any longer.

By exposing yourself to the sun, you will optimize your vitamin D production naturally. If you live where you don't get enough sun, I recommend you contact me for a cataplex D whole food supplement.

These are the simple strategies I wish I knew when I was younger ( I could of saved myself some scaring) . I encourage you to try them out because there's a strong probability they will virtually eliminate your acne, and all the associated emotional and psychological pain that so frequently affects those with this condition.

I also recommend you get the Carefree cleanser and Mountain Mud masque that is specially formulated to establish a proper level of good bacteria on your skin,if you sweat a lot.

To your beautiful clear skin.
